John Gorham Print-Face Typesetters Image-Self publish promotional poster circa 1970's Very Rare. This is a rare opportunity to by one of John Gorham's designs, they do not come along very often. This image was designed by John Gorham, for one of Europe's major type setters, Face, he then later used it, with their permission, to reproduce it himself, to be used as a promotional image.
Paper size 20 x 15" artwork 9.5" x 13.5. To most people John Gorham is not a name that comes to mind, but in the world of Advertising, Print, Film and Design (70's and 80's) he was highly regarded by many of the top directors, publishers and advertising agencies, probably one of the best UK designers in the last 60 years and was given D&AD president's awards for a lifetime's contribution to British design in 1993. One of the reasons for this lack of knowledge, was that he was very much a hands-on designer, not using computers and was pre internet, so there is very little information about his work, plus it has rarely come on the market. Tap his name in google and you will not find many images. One of the few images found on the net is the pub sign for the Cricketers at the Oval in 1979 (John was a big cricket fan) and the Red Monarch poster for David Puttnam.Also the English Riviera and many stamps. Among John Gorham's stamp designs were the British 1990 Christmas issue, the 1991 Wintertime set, two 1995 stamps celebrating the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 1990 issue to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. A modified version of the Queen Mother set was issued as Commemoration after her death in 2002.
John Gorham was definitely a man who would have been more at home living in the late 19th or early 20th century, than in the 70/80s, when craft and attention to detail were the norm. He was self-taught, was a very quiet and unassuming man often doubting his own ability, even though he was one of the best. He did teach for 10 years at the RCA and the well-known product designer Richard Seymour first started as an assistant to John in 1977.
